Resistance Training for Weight Loss: Part II

In Part I of this series, we discussed how resistance, or strength, training can help you lose more weight than cardio alone. In this blog post, we’ll go into the specifics of just how resistance training can help elevate your weight loss, and discuss some ways that you can incorporate resistance training workouts into your weight loss plan.

With the TFT, you can reap all the benefits of cardio and strength training in a single, 100% portable device. The TFT’s state-of-the-art design allows for maximum safety and effectiveness, and comes in a variety of different resistance strengths. It works by using a closed chain tension system to put the body under constant working tension force, allowing for progressively increased resistance. This not only helps you avoid weight loss plateaus, but also makes each movement of your workout more effective, saving you time and energy. Increases Muscle & Burns Fat

When you engage in cardio alone, your body may actually lose muscle, by slowing recovery time and burning up calories that you need to get strong. Since muscle burns fat, even while resting, it follows that bodies with more muscle mass will have an easier time burning calories. In fact, one pound of muscle burns about 50 calories a day, whereas one pound of fat burns a mere four calories a day. Therefore, when you increase in muscle, you decrease in fat.

When first starting a strength training routine, you may see your numbers on the scale rise a bit, but don’t be alarmed. This increased weight reflects a higher muscle mass, rather than more fat. More muscles will give you a more attractive, toned appearance, rather than the gaunt physique that can result from cardio alone.

Increases Metabolism

It is well known that consistent strength training leads to a higher Base Metabolic Rate (BMR). In fact, it elevates your metabolism for hours after you engage in it, and long term it will increase your metabolism permanently.

So—what exactly is your BMR? Basal metabolic rate is the amount of energy that you expend while performing basic life-sustaining functions, such as breathing, sleeping, and digesting food. In order to lose weight, you need to expend more calories than your BMR, which is basically the number of calories you would burn if you stayed in bed all day.

There are many calculators available online to help you determine your BMR. In order to lose about a pound a week (the maximum recommended rate of weight loss according to fitness experts), you need to detract 500 calories from your BMR daily. The more exercise you partake in each week, the higher your BMR. Thus, not only will resistance training help you burn more calories each day, even while you’re sitting at your desk, but it will also mean that you can take more calories in, making for a more satisfying diet.

Prevents Exercise Boredom

Let’s face it–exercise is great, but sometimes it can get a little boring. Even the most avid athlete is familiar with the mind-dulling experience of staring at a gym wall for seemingly hours on end. When all you do is cardio day in and day out, your motivation can quickly plummet, leading you to pack back on the pounds. The best way to beat exercise burnout is to vary your workout routine.

Adding resistance training to your cardio routine is a fun, easy way to keep yourself motivated and avoid fitness plateaus. Best of all, resistance training takes way less time than cardio. When you work out with the TFT, in particular, you naturally enact your abdominal muscles, no matter if you are working biceps, triceps, chest, legs, etc. This means you don’t have to devote time for specific muscle groups. Say goodbye to “leg day” for good!

Another great way to beat exercise boredom is to enroll in group classes. With group classes, you’ll have other people around, as well as a trained fitness instructor, to help keep you motivated.  At the TFT Fit Lab in Columbus, we offer a variety of fun, fast workout classes featuring the TFT, including our 30-minute Strength of Flexibility and 30-minute High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) class.
